Josh is in the middle wearing a red sweater with blue stripes.
Before stepping up on the risers, each child said something they were thankful for in the microphone.
Child 1: I'm thankful for my family.
Child 2: I'm thankful for my family.
...
Child 10: I'm thankful for my country.
Child 11: I'm thankful for God.
Child 12: I'm thankful for Thanksgiving.
...
Child 17: I'm thankful for Miss Lenegar. (the child's teacher)
...
Child 20: I'm thankful for my family.
Child 21: I'm thankful for my brother.
Joshua: I'm thankful for hot dogs.
The room exploded into laughter. Poor Josh looked over the crowed wondering why everyone was laughing. He was dead serious. His birthday is coming up, and he's been thinking about it a lot. Plus, the idea of eating what you want on your birthday is important to him. What does he want? Hot Dogs. He's brought it up at about every dinner time.
The rest of the children were thankful for families, God, parents, siblings, teachers, schools, etc. A few of the memorable ones include: rock and roll, pizza, hot dogs (again), and cheese. They all were said after Josh's turn and didn't get as big of a response .
We'd gotten there a little bit late. I was grateful there was a few seats left even though they were in the back. My zoom didn't work the greatest that far away, though.
Next time, I'll remember to tell him to stand a little straighter, but he was ready to get out of there. Overall it was fun. In the car, after Josh said he hadn't wanted people to laugh at him, I explained that the people thought his response was fun and different. I forgot to mention that no one was expecting anyone to say that. He then wished he said astronauts. Thinking he was trying to be silly, I told him I didn't think that was a good idea. "But," he said with a slight whine in his voice. "Astronauts are better than hot dogs."
"Oh," I said realizing he was dead serious. "Aren't you thankful for your family?"
Silence.
I told him he didn't need to answer that. It's not that he doesn't love his family. He does. I just think we need to have an FHE lesson on Thanksgiving.
